Berlin Airlift and Operation Little Vittles

While flying almost non-stop during the Berlin Airlift, Gail Halvorsen used some of his precious non-flying time to tour Berlin.  Halvorsen was moved by the destruction he saw, and was even more impressed by a group of children gathered near the runway of the airport.  Touched by the hunger-stricken condition of these children, Halvorsen shared all he had with him: two sticks of gum.  This event would serve as the catalyst for subsequent candy sharing via "candy bombings."
